Hasta la vista single use plastics...
Did you know:

  • half of all the plastic produced in the world is designed to be used only once and then thrown away!
  • around 800 species worldwide, including 77 Australian species, are impacted by marine debris.

Check out the Palaszczuk Government's new Plastic Pollution Reduction Plan and together let's turn it around.

Containers for Change
Containers for Change has hit 1 billion returns! This excellent scheme has been an amazing success here in our region - creating jobs, reducing litter and putting a little extra change in people's pockets. Visit the website for more information on how it works and do your bit for our environment.

Nespresso Pod Recycling

Just a reminder that our office at Shop 4, 232 Young Rd, Narangba, takes used Nespresso pods for recycling.

St Eugene College

I had the honour of presenting some of the many Sports Awards at the St Eugene College, Night of Excellence in November. Congratulations and well done to all the award recipients.

Kidsafe at the office
Thanks Charles and sponsors Kidsafe and Transurban 👍👍 for spending time at the office on November 6 and December 13, checking and fitting child safety anchors to vehicles - free for Linkt customers.   Keep an eye out for 2020 dates and visit the Transurban website to make a booking.

Full steam ahead at Dakabin Station!
The contract has been awarded for the Dakabin Station upgrade. On November 8, I joined the Transport Minister, Mark Bailey, Member for Murrumba, Steven Miles, and Gemma from the Dakabin Station Action Group (pictured on site) for this great announcement.  Work will start in the new year so stay posted for updates.

Kallangur Bowls

Thanks to Kallangur Bowls for inviting me to roll the first bowl for the start of their 2019 Prime Minister's cup.  It was good to see Narangba competing as well - flying the flag for the Kurwongbah elecorate!

Lest We Forget

Thank you to everyone involved in organising the three beautiful Remembrance Day services in the Kurwongbah electorate this year:

  • Buchanan Park, Burpengary Anzac Memorial
  • Bray Park-Strathpine RSL Sub Branch at Club Pine Rivers (pictured)
  • Pine Rivers District RSL Sub Branch at Norths Leagues and Services.

Do I Know You?

Social media is such a core part of all our lives. However, we all need to be vigilant when communicating online.  The Queensland Family and Child Commission has launched a new online safety campaign to highlight the importance of being vigilant and aware of who we are talking to online, especially when it comes to our children.  For more information please visit www.qfcc.qld.gov.au/doiknowu .

High Tea at Parliament House

Thanks to Minister Shannon Fentiman for hosting the Premier's high tea for volunteers at at Parliament House last month.  Sadly the bush fire crisis meant Premier Palazszcuk was called away on the day, but it didn't stop us celebrating the valuable work of women who volunteer in our communities.

On behalf of our community, a big thank you to those who attended, for all of the hard work that you do (pictured here with Kurwongbah volunteers).

Burpengary State Secondary College Awards Night

Congratulations to the amazing students at Burpengary State Secondary College.

I attended their awards night on November 14 and heard about the great work that
Orange Sky Australia do, as well as from a proud principal about why so many students are achieving good results.

Well done to all the award winners.

The best things in life are free...

Congratulations to Year 12 students who graduated this year!  Well done and best of luck to you all. Don't forget that you could be eligible for free TAFE education under the Palaszczuk Government's vocational education and training scheme

Burpengary State School Safety Zone

Congratulations to the Burpengary State School P & C Association for launching their School Zone Safety project.

It is a fantastic initiative with the aim of making drop off and pick ups safer and more efficient.

Petrie University is nearly here!

The new university at Petrie is already a game changer for our community.  At any given day there are 200, mostly local, workers building the University of the Sunshine Coast’s lecture theatres and learning spaces.  From 2020, our residents will be able to access world class education right here on our doorstep.

State Governments don’t usually get involved in building universities but I’m proud as the local member, that our Palaszczuk Government was able to contribute the land that Stage 1 is built on so that the university can be delivered on time.

Emergency Vehicle Priority System

We are making it easier for first responders to reach people in need quicker.  The Emergency Vehicle Priority (EVP) system, which automatically triggers green lights for emergency vehicles, has been rolled out at over 2000 TMR managed intersections across Queensland since we started in 2015.

Research shows that travel time for EVP-enabled emergency vehicles was reduced by up to 26 per cent, giving emergency workers that extra bit of assistance to do what they do best.

Moreton Police District medal presentation

It was an honour last month to represent Police Minister Mark Ryan at the Moreton Police District medal presentation and hand National Service medals to some well deserving officers.

Tech Hub - check this out!

I fully endorse the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s decision to preserve a 65 hectare parcel of land for a future tech and innovation hub in Petrie. I also strongly support the Council’s decision to have this land managed by an independent panel of experts - thereby ensuring the land doesn’t fall prey to developers. Video from Nine News Queensland.

Disability Parking inquiry
Our State Government has introduced legislation to expand disability parking to include people who are blind.  We're also doubling the fine for those who illegally use a disability parking space.  The Transport and Public Works Committee that I chair has been charged with examining the bill.

Submissions to the inquiry can be sent to:
Phone: 07 3553 6621
Fax: 07 3553 6699

Burpengary Pines Christmas BBQ
Thanks to the residents of Burpengary Pines Village for letting us come along and cook our annual Christmas lunch for you. I also appreciated the help from Mark Ryan MP and Councillor Peter Flannery.
Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence & Innovation Awards
It was a pleasure to attend the 2019 Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence & Innovation Awards.  The evening was hosted by local legend, Ian Skippen. Congratulations to all the winners particularly the Kurwongbah businesses Basil and Vine Burpengary and Print Approach, an Eckersley Print Group Company. Well done. 👍👍

Retirement Village and Retirement Park Forum

It was good to hear feedback at our Retirement Village and Retirement Park Forum in Burpengary on December 4. Thanks to Minister Mick de Brenni for coming along to listen and Chris Whiting MP for co-hosting.

Q Build at Caboolture

Earlier this month I was joined by Minister Mick de Brenni and Mark Ryan MP as well as other colleagues who were all excited by the launch of the new QBuild at Caboolture. This depot will be the training ground for local tradies for years to come.  As an electrician myself it was an honour to be there and share in this proud moment.

Narangba State School

It was an honour as always to participate in Narangba State School’s awards presentation. Well done to all the award winners, new school captains and graduating students.

Christmas Lights Judging at Burpengary Pines Village

It’s always great to get along to Burpengary Pines to judge the Christmas lights with my wife and team.

Thanks to the managers Richard and Cheryl and the residents for making the park so beautiful in celebration of the festive season.

Protecting Queensland Koalas

The new draft Koala Conservation Strategy is out for discussion. I welcome all of our strong advocates for Koalas in the community to provide feedback at:

MBRC Drought Declared

Moreton Bay Regional Council area has been drought declared, effective 1 December 2019.  Information for locals in need of drought assistance can be obtained through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries website.

YJET Awards

I attended my first YJET Awards Ceremony at Caboolture Sports Club. It was great to see all the graduates being rewarded for their hard work towards attaining their junior certificates.

Well done all and thanks to Ministers Mark Ryan and Di Farmer for inviting me.

Lawnton State School – Celebration of Excellence

I was honoured to present awards and certificates at the Lawnton State School celebration of excellence on December 10.

Congratulations to all the worthy winners and all who make this such a great school.

Burpengary State School Year 6 Graduation

I was invited to present certificates at Burpengary State School’s Year 6 graduation ceremony on December 11. It’s always a pleasure to be at this amazing school.

Jinibara State School
I presented award certificates to graduating year 6 students at Jinibara State School on December 12.  It’s always an honour to be invited along to special occasions like this at Jinibara. Well done to the graduating year 6 class of 2019 and thanks for the Green Day song at the end, it’s one of my favourites.

Fingerling Release
Last weekend I was fortunate to be able to join council colleagues to help release fingerlings into Lake Kurwongbah with Pine Rivers Fish Management Association.  It was good to see some kids helping to look after our future fish stock.
