Hello everyone

It's been a busy couple of months as we brought down the State Budget (check out some Kurwongbah highlights below) and got stuck into the Estimates process.

As Chair of the Transport and Resources Committee, I know how much work goes into the preparation for both - in our government departments, in our Ministerial offices and in the Parliament.  So I take every opportunity to thank everyone involved.  If you missed the live broadcast of my Estimates hearing on Tuesday 2 August, don't worry, the transcript will be up in coming weeks, and I've included some highlights for you below.

Also covered in this e-news edition is:
  • the new SEQ Rail Connect plan.
  • consultation on the Bruce Highway Western Alternative - Stage 2 (Moorina to Narangba).
  • information on the review of site rent and sales processes in manufactured homes and residential parks in Queensland.
  • free RATs for Queensland concession card holders.
  • our latest Energy Update.
I appreciate your opinions on these initiatives and more, so please get in touch with your feedback, or if my office and I can be of assistance to you in some way.

Stay safe and stay warm!

QUEENSLAND STATE BUDGET 2022-23
ESTIMATES
It's always a long day chairing Estimates.  This year we ran from 9am to 8.15pm as my Committee - Transport and Resources - examined three Ministers and four portfolios.

I've nicknamed this year the “Estimates of Repeated Questions”.  No matter how good you are at paraphrasing, the same will question will generally get you the same answer, but it was certainly entertaining to watch Opposition Members get upset as a result of their own repetition.

My top three positive portfolio highlights this Estimates were:
  • The Maritime Infrastructure and Investment Program – improving connectivity, access, safety, and pollution responses of maritime services.  The program aims to enhance industry sustainability, revitalise coastal shipping and create more Australian trained jobs.
  • $35 million for feasibility works on further pumped hydro energy storage sites – building on the success of Wivenhoe’s pumped storage which helped to save our electricity network during the failure of a coal fired generator at Callide last year.
  • QBuild progressing a high-quality apprenticeship program – because we know that investing in training and jobs pays dividends for our economy.
We've just released our SEQ Rail Connect Plan - check out the proposed 3 Sector network map above.

You can read about the plan at
https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/About-us/Corporate-information/Publications/SEQ-Rail-Connect .
Formal consultation is now open on the Bruce Highway Western Alternative - Stage 2 transport corridor options (extracts from the project newsletter below).

Visit https://www.yoursay-projects.tmr.qld.gov.au/bhwa to have your say before consultation closes on Friday 2 September.
The State Government is conducting a review into manufactured homes and residential parks in Queensland, specifically issues relating to site rent increases and sales.  I have been a strong advocate for another review of the Act, so I’m really pleased to see it happening.

I think it’s really important for us to find the right balance between the needs of residents to have affordable housing and strong owners’ rights, and the ability for park owners to fund the ongoing maintenance and improvements necessary to maintain livability - without taking advantage of residents.

If you live in, or know someone who lives in a manufactured home park, I encourage you to fill in the survey online by next Monday, 15 August:

Please note, there are spaces on pages 20 and 21 to comment on issues that are not specifically raised in the issues paper.
If you hold any of the concession cards below, you should be eligible to get 5 free RATs per month.  Visit the Queensland Health website to find your nearest distribution centre.
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Low Income Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold, White or Orange card.
